Opuwo Town was established under the Local Authority Act, 23 of 1992 (amended in 2000), to provide essential municipal services to its residents. These services include water supply, waste management, sewage collection and disposal, roads and stormwater drainage, street lighting, and parks and recreation, among others.
The name “Opuwo” originated from a visit by Hugo Hahn, the Commissioner of Ondangwa. Upon arriving in the area to establish an office, Hahn requested land from the local headmen. After being allocated a small plot, the headmen offered him additional land, but Hahn declined, saying “Opuwo,” meaning “it’s enough” in the local language. Consequently, the name Opuwo was adopted. Before this, the residents referred to the area as Otjihinamaparero.
Opuwo is located 750 km northwest of Windhoek and 230 km from Oshakati. It serves as the capital of the Kunene Region, with an estimated population of at least 12,000 people. Renowned for its remarkable topography, Opuwo features stunning landscapes and traditional homesteads and villages that cater to the commercial, social, and economic needs of both villagers and tourists.
The local economy of Opuwo is thriving, largely driven by the booming construction sector. This sector’s growth has led to numerous commercial and residential buildings currently under construction. The future economic outlook for Opuwo is highly optimistic, especially with the recent discovery of a substantial iron ore deposit near the town. This deposit is one of the largest in the world, and mining activities that began in 2016 are expected to continue for a century.
